The magazine is an online product that will go to print once the readership increases to a desired level. In the mean time the online site will  feature enhanced content with the current issue available for download. The first issue will be released in July 2010 with monthly releases thereafter.

Florida Russian Magazine is part of a larger media project that American Experience is developing.  The project will fill the empty market space for Russian speaking residents and those abroad who want to learn more about life in Florida. “We are working toward multiple channels of information and entertainment to connect and inform the Russian speaking community.” said, Jef Gray, CEO of American Experience. “We had to get all the content into the Russian language including a recruiting effort for Russian writers, editors, photographers and advertisers. Now we’re about to release our premier issue!”, said Jef Gray, CEO of American Experience.

The magazine is the starting point, then a dating site, an online Radio and TV channel will follow. All content will be in the Russian Language and written from the perspective of Russians living in Florida.

“It’s going to offer a great value for Russian speakers as they can find a range of media from print to TV and Radio in one place.” said Natalya Illarionova, President of American Experience.

The architecture of the media project will be funded by an advertising service that provides access to the media channels. An advertiser can choose from print, TV, radio, dating site ads or all of them to maximize their brand awareness, product or service. Additionally, the ads will have a detail history to show how many times they were clicked or viewed.

“The advantage of having multiple places to present an ad to a target audience is great, but our tracking features that will also provide statistics on the ad’s success. Clients may want to try two different ads to see which one gets the most response. Overall it will help businesses focus their advertising costs and increase sales.”, said Jef Gray.

American Experience has partnered with Russian-American InfoCenter to provide a solution for Russians in need of passport services while residing in the United States.

On April 10, 2009 the Russian ministry of foreign affairs established a new regulation regarding passport renewals. Citizens of Russia living in the U.S. could no longer mail their documents to the consulate–they would have to appear in person in Washington D.C. The requirement was based on enhanced security measures that are part of the new biometric passport standards. Unfortunately, the travel and expense puts a tremendous burden on the individual in need of renewing their documents. The new process requires an appointment with the Consular, two trips to Washington DC, appearance in person and of course standing in lines throughout the day.

In the past, Russian citizens could send their documents through the mail but that is no longer permitted. There is however, some good news! The Embassy realized that there are many who may not be able to appear in person for various reasons. To meet this need, they have appointed trusted organizations who can compile the application documents and send them in for processing. The partnership between American Experience and Russian-American InfoCenter is one of the few organizations in the U.S. that is recognized by the Russian Embassy.  The Embassy will only accept paperwork on behalf of an individual through these organizations.

The process began 5 years ago and required extensive research and patience as demographics were compared to what other schools were using as curriculum. The school’s provider of text books stated there were no schools in Central Florida requesting material for Russian classes-Lake Howell was the first.

Today the class is comprised of less than 20 students, who’s reason for learning the language varies from curiosity and challenge, to a desire to retain what they may have learned from Russian speaking parents. Learning Russian is more complex than the other languages like Spanish, French or German because it uses a different and bigger alphabet (Cyrillic) with sounds not found in English. However, the students appear to have taken quickly to the task, according to Toomey, “They are already speaking complete sentences, writing and reading in Russian without hesitation”, she said.

As of the 2000 Census, Russian was spoken by 7% of the US population. This made it the second fastest growing language in the US at that time. It will be interesting to see the results from the 2010 census, which will hopefully incline more schools in Central Florida to follow Lake Howell’s lead. The Russian Federation has half the population of the United States (not including the other
Russian speaking countries of the FSU) but with twice the land mass-it’s obvious the future will have opportunity and value for those capable of speaking Russian both in the United States and abroad.

We applaud Lake Howell High School for bringing a long overdue element to our school system and have invited the teacher and students to be  our honored guests at any of our Society events. We also look forward to seeing more classes like this in our area.

American Experience is expanding its presence on the social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. The movement has been gradual with fan pages and twitter accounts appearing over time but now a more focused approach is taking place to improve brand recognition and attract more clients. American Experience has over 10 websites that define the various business lines offered by the corporation but the integration with social media has been limited-until now.

“The rise of social media has given new opportunity to build our corporate presence and brand recognition for popular business channels like Florida Tur and the Russian Culture Society. We’re also excited to use it as a launch point for our new startups. For example, the staff that builds and maintains our websites, called “Cold Pizza Design“, are now providing those services to more companies as a business service. Then we have a new social mixer project, called “International Introductions of Orlando” that will host events to connect local foreign singles with eligible mates.” explained Jef Gray, CEO of American Experience.

In the past a site was designed and optimized to reach audiences through search engine results and linking strategies. However, the time required for success is greatly reduced when combined with the familiarity and viral nature of Social media.

About Shashlik: Shashlik is a Russian tradition similar to what Americans call shish-ka-bob. Beef, pork, lamb or other types of meet are loaded onto skewers and mixed with spices, vegetables and then cooked over an open flame. The meat is usually marinated for several hours prior to being cooked. Each family has their own unique way of preparing shashlik making it important to explore the creativity of other’s recipes.
